Highways England traffic officers in the south west have lent their support to today’s awareness event for the My Red Thumb road safety campaign.
Launched by Devon County Council in 2014 as a multi-agency road safety initiative, the social media campaign highlights the dangers of using mobile phones while driving, and has since grown into a national event around the annual My Red Thumb Day.
Traffic officers based at the Chelston outstation in Devon and the Regional Control Centre at Avonmouth, near Bristol, did their bit today by painting their thumbs red and wearing red bands to help spread the road safety message.
Sean Dowding, operations manager at the Regional Control Centre, said:
Safety is the top priority for Highways England and we believe no-one should be harmed when travelling or working on our road network. For more traffic and safety information go to our website. The My Red Thumb campaign is a positive and effective road safety message and it was a good opportunity for our traffic officers, who patrol the motorways and major A roads in the south west, to be involved and to help spread that message.
