The A&E winter crisis: lessons from last year

Nuffield Trust -  This analysis of winter pressures on the NHS found that 3.6 per cent of patients took up over a third of all bed capacity in acute hospitals in England last year. The patients in this group were likely to have been frail older people who weren't able to be discharged to their residence despite medical treatment being finished. It argues that this helps to explain why the NHS suffered a 'winter crisis' last year despite receiving extra funding from NHS England to deal with winter pressures.
